To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. On May 5, 2022, the Alpha House was one of seven Michigan preservation projects awarded Governor’s Awards for Historic Preservation at a ceremony at the Michigan State Capitol hosted by the State Historic Preservation Office. The Alpha House was placed on the National Register of Historic Place on Augfor its historical significance and role in the cultural and social life of the Detroit Community. Day each year, where brothers and friends of the chapter complete a local service project and hold a public program to honor Brother King and his legacy. We also host an annual day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. The Gamma Lambda Chapter has been one of the top fundraisers for March of Dimes, raising more than ten thousand dollars each year. Hundreds of meals are delivered each Easter, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day to the local community. For almost three decades the Alpha House has been one of the distribution centers for Detroit-area Meals on Wheels. To this day, the Gamma Lambda Chapter continues to have a strong social mission, and the Alpha House is central to supporting that mission. The Gamma Lambda Chapter received recognition from Brenda Jones, President of the Detroit City Council and from the Michigan Historical Commission. The unveiling of the new historical marker at the Alpha House was the kickoff event to mark the centennial celebration of the oldest fraternity house within Alpha.
The spirit of Alpha will continue to live in the lives of dedicated men of Gamma Lambda, not only to be a friend of man but to serve man and strive to uplift his welfare. Let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man. and every ounce of strength to build a greater America. In this respect we dedicate ourselves to the principles of scholarship, manly deeds and love for all mankind, active participation, uplifting of the community. Just as the Alpha men whose vision and toil have brought us to this great day, we hereby commemorate this House and Plaque for our posterity.īrother Cotman reaffirmed his personal commitment to Alpha Phi Alpha and relayed his belief to all members by adding: However, of equal importance is ourselves in the commitment to participate in its rebirth. This event also recognizes the commitment we have made to the molders which chronicle the history of Detroit. It gives me great pleasure today to represent Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha in this historic dedication. At the dedication, Brother Cotman stated: On April 23, 1978, Chapter President Ivan Cotman dedicated the historical marker. On August 31, 1977, the Alpha House was rewarded for years of habitation by the Michigan Historical Commission, citing the house as significant for its role as a focal point for Black social, cultural, educational, and community service.
